Not too long after writing this post I changed from Boxee to it's parent, XBMC (Xbox Media Center) also available for Linux. The system now runs smoothly with the XBMC Live version, a stripped down version of Ubuntu 9.10 (?) with XBMC as the window manager. A short update.
